Women do not get BV from toilet seats, bedding, swimming pools, or from touching objects around them. Women that have never had sexual intercourse are rarely affected.

Women with BV may have an abnormal vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor. Some women report a strong fish-like odor, especially after intercourse. Discharge, if present, is usually white or gray; it can be thin. Women with BV may also have burning during urination or itching around the outside of the vagina, or both. Some women with BV report no signs or symptoms at all. In most cases, BV causes no complications. But there are some serious risks from BV including:
  • Having BV can increase a woman's susceptibility to HIV infection if she is exposed to the HIV virus.
  • Having BV increases the chances that an HIV-infected woman can pass HIV to her sex partner.

In the United States, as many as 16 percent of pregnant women have BV. The cause of BV is not fully understood. BV is associated with an imbalance in the bacteria that are normally found in a woman's vagina. The vagina normally contains mostly "good" bacteria, and fewer "harmful" bacteria. BV develops when there is an increase in harmful bacteria.

Not much is known about how women get BV. There are many unanswered questions about the role that harmful bacteria play in causing BV. Any woman can get BV. However, some activities or behaviors can upset the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina and put women at increased risk.

How is bacterial vaginosis treated?

It can be treated in one of several ways. Your doctor may prescribe pills for you to take by mouth, or a cream or gel to put in your vagina. It's important to use your medicine exactly as your doctor tells you.If your doctor prescribes metronidazole (brand name: Flagyl) or other medicines, don't drink any alcohol while taking the medicine or for 24 hours afterward.

Combining alcohol with these medicines can cause nausea and vomiting. Even the small amount of alcohol in many cough syrups can cause nausea and vomiting if you're taking metronidazole. Also, be sure to tell your doctor about any other medicines you are currently taking.
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is the name of a condition in women where the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. It is sometimes accompanied by discharge, odor, pain, itching, or burning.

It is an overgrowth of harmful bacteria in the vagina due to the depletion of very valuable lactobacillus - reason unknown. The vagina normally contains a lot of "good" bacteria, called lactobacilli (say: "lack-toe bah-sil-li"), and a few other types of bacteria, called anaerobes (say: "ann-air-robes").

Too many anaerobes can cause bacterial vaginosis. We don't know why the anaerobe bacteria overgrow and cause this imbalance. You may notice a discharge from your vagina. The discharge may be clear or colored. It may be very light or heavy. It may have a fishy smell, especially after you have intercourse. Some women have bacterial vaginosis without any symptoms.

Outsourcing Drug Trials to India

The procedures drugmakers were using to test the potentially dangerous and useless avian flu vaccine on 150 healthy patients in the Washington D.C. area. One day, we may not see nearly as many drug trials as we do today -- at least in this country -- because drug companies are moving them to India.
This abominable practice exploits both ends of the spectrum in India: Its educated work force administering those trials and the uneducated living in poverty who have no idea what harm they're doing to their bodies for $100. The practice began after pressure from the World Health Organization forced Indian officials to ban the formulation of drugs developed in other nations (thanks to reverse engineering) nine months ago.
Considering moving trials could save potentially save drugmakers 60 percent in development costs, one business expert estimates such outsourcing to India may amount to a $2 billion industry there.

Supposed ethics standards adopted by the Indian government claim to ensure the treatment naive -- business-speak for people who may not understand the health-harming consequences of their bad decisions -- won't be harmed by clinical research performed there.

Why Costco Blows Away Wal-Mart

Although you've often read my thoughts about Costco on my Web site, it's been hard for me to find a good piece that sums up why I like their stores so much worth posting here. That is, until I discovered ABC News' revealing story about Costco (free text link below).
Much of the story focuses on Costco CEO Jim Sinegal, treated like a celebrity among his admirers and, not surprisingly, his employees. In fact, Sinegal insists his company's identity hinges on creating and maintaining a "first-name-basis" environment with everyone. Even down to the "Jim" nametag he wears when visiting Costco stores.

If you haven't been Costco, one of the unusual things -- besides great prices and selection -- you'll see there: Friendly people enjoying their work. What's more, Costco's turnover rate is five times lower than that of Wal-Mart and employees make as much 40 percent more an hour than at Sam's Club, Wal-Mart's warehouse counterpart.
Talking about Wal-Mart, I finally had a chance to view the documentary Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price.
Most people know that the Walton family is the richest family in the world and collectively are worth more than $100 billion. What most people do not know, and what the video reveals is that they donate less than 1 percent of their income to charity. Contrast that to Bill Gates who donates nearly 60 percent of his income and is the Time person of the year for his philanthropic endeavors.

Wal-Mart was in the news late last month for the very issues that the video discussed.
California ordered Wal-Mart to pay $172 million to thousands of Cailfornia employees who were illegally denied lunch breaks. In the same federal prosecutors in Chicago investigated whether it had improperly transported returned goods classified as hazardous wastes.
By comparison, Costco is my absolute favorite store to shop in. I am frequently absolutely amazed when I see how well they run their stores. I have never seen any business operate more efficiently.

Will Another Vioxx Critic Be Silenced?

Another of this nation's most vocal drug company critics -- Dr. Eric Topol -- may soon be silenced, although, I suspect, only temporarily.
Until recently, Dr. Topol was the outspoken, most public figure associated with the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. Over the past month, however, Dr. Topol's forceful opinions against such toxic drugs as Vioxx may have forced the clinic to demote him from his post as head of the clinic's medical school.

At the heart of the conflict: High-profile medical institutions like the Cleveland Clinic far too beholden to drug and medical device companies for money, technology and new developments, once again leveraging commerce against patient health.
Unfortunately, according to experts quoted in this excellent New York Times piece, the problems reported at the Cleveland Clinic aren't isolated. This struggle to balance good profits with good health is being felt across the board at many medical institutions.
Meanwhile, an independent committee is reviewing potential conflicts of interest at the clinic, but Dr. Topol isn't involved. In fact, he was recently removed for the clinic's conflict of interest committee...
Sounds like Dr. Topol is being treated to same shabby way as one of my heroes, Dr. David Graham, whose equally courageous stand against Vioxx has made him a pariah at the FDA.

I have what seems like the beginning of a yeast infection... I found this post to be quite useful, and I think I'm going to try tea tree oil. (I have some at home that I just got the other day) However, I thought I would ask on here if there would be any problems using that with the Nuvaring? I'm going to put the oil on a tampon. Would that interfere with the hormones at all? Thank you very much, and apoligies to the squeamish people. ;-)

Yeast Rises To A New Occasion WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A tiny, one-celled organism that turns agricultural wastes into ethanol may be the key to providing car drivers with an inexpensive, clean-burning fuel.

Nancy Ho, a molecular geneticist at Purdue University, has modified the genes of a particular type of yeast so that the tiny organism can convert more of the sugars found in plant matter — leftover corn stalks, tree leaves, wood chips, grass clippings, even cardboard boxes — into ethanol.

Her nearly 20-year effort to produce the genetically engineered yeast has earned her and her industrial partners an R&D 100 Award, to be given Sept. 24 by R&D Magazine to the developers of the year's 100 most technologically significant products and processes.
Ethanol, a form of alcohol, is a liquid fuel that can be used by itself or blended with gasoline to create "gasohol." When burned, ethanol produces far less air pollution and greenhouse gases than gasoline. Currently, ethanol is produced when yeast ferments the glucose, a form of sugar, found in food crops such as cane sugar, corn and other starch-rich grains. However, Ho says, these crops are expensive and in limited supply, making them too costly to produce ethanol on a large scale. The genetically engineered yeast produces at least 30 percent more ethanol from a given amount of plant material than the unmodified version of the yeast or any other yeast. It is also superstable and does not need to be grown in special nutrients or under special conditions. And the yeast can use agricultural and other organic wastes — an abundant, completely renewable domestic resource — rather than food crops, a potential benefit to farmers who could gain extra income by selling crop residues to companies that produce ethanol, Ho says.

"This plant material is an ideal and inexpensive feedstock for ethanol fuel production," Ho says. "This genetically engineered yeast will make it possible to substantially lower the cost of producing ethanol on a large scale.
The goal is to make ethanol not only competitive with the cost of gasoline at the pump, but even much cheaper. Using ethanol produced from plant wastes not only will reduce our country's dependence on foreign oil, but, because it is clean-burning, it also will reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from cars."
Ho and her colleagues in the Molecular Genetics Group at Purdue's Laboratory of Renewable Resources Engineering (LORRE) won the R&D 100 Award for their work with SWAN Biomass Co., Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., to develop the genetically modified yeast. The annual awards will be given at a Sept. 24 banquet and exhibit at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry.

The yeast that Ho modified, called Saccharomyces yeast, is an environmentally safe microorganism commonly used by industry to ferment glucose into ethanol. It also has been used since ancient times to make wine. But glucose is only one type of sugar in plant matter. Beginning in the early 1980s, Ho's research group and others around the world attempted to genetically modify the yeast so that it could ferment both glucose and another plant sugar, xylose, into ethanol. A yeast that could ferment both sugars could produce more ethanol from the same amount of plant material, making the process more economical.

"About 30 to 40 percent of the sugar released from plant matter, called cellulosic biomass, is xylose, and the other 60 to 70 percent is glucose," Ho says. "If you can only ferment 60 percent of the sugar into ethanol, you could never make it cheap enough to use to drive your car."
Over several years, all the U.S. research groups gave up pursuing a yeast that could ferment both glucose and xylose, but Ho's group and three other international groups continued.

"I stayed with this project because I thought it was workable, and I was interested in 'green' chemistry," Ho says. "It's a subject that I feel strongly about and that I've always wanted to research — something has to be done to solve our waste and pollution problems."
In 1993, after more than 10 years of dedicated research, Ho's group became the first in the world to produce a genetically engineered Saccharomyces yeast that can effectively ferment both glucose and xylose. Ho first determined that the Saccharomyces yeast needed to produce three strong enzymes for it to efficiently convert xylose to ethanol. She then selected a yeast that could ferment xylose, but which was not effective for fermenting glucose, and cloned from that yeast three genes responsible for producing the xylose-fermenting enzymes. Ho also developed a new method to integrate multiple copies of the three xylose-metabolizing genes into the chromosome of the Saccharomyces yeast.

"Our genetically engineered yeast not only can effectively ferment xylose, but also can ferment glucose and xylose simultaneously to ethanol, a property that no other natural microorganism has," Ho says. "This is important for the industrial production of ethanol, because it takes less time while producing more product."

In addition, the yeast does not require expensive antibiotics to keep the cloned genes active, and the yeast produces very few byproducts, which would have to be removed from the ethanol.
Ho also credits the success of the yeast project to LORRE's director, Professor George Tsao, for his foresight nearly 20 years ago in anticipating the importance of gene cloning technology for the future of biotechnology.

"In 1980 he decided to establish a molecular genetics research group at LORRE, and he had the courage then to put the responsibility for establishing this group, as well as for carrying out this important project, on a self-made gene-cloning technologist, a woman scientist, and a Purdue graduate who for family reasons had never left Purdue after receiving her Ph.D."
Geneticist Zhengdao Chen and technician Adam Brainard, members of Ho's research group, also contributed to the development of the yeast.

In 1993, Amoco Corp. licensed the yeast strain. SWAN Biomass Co., a subsidiary of Amoco, was established to develop the yeast for commercial applications. The company tested the yeast in a large-scale testing facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. The results confirmed that the yeast is effective at co-fermenting glucose and xylose from cellulosic biomass into ethanol, Ho says.

Robert Walker, president of SWAN Biomass Co., says, "The first commercial applications of this new technology are likely to be in the production of fuel ethanol from field wastes generated on farms or from wastes that result as crops are processed for sale."
Ho says the next step is to further improve the yeast. "We anticipate that our final engineered yeast strain may require only half the time to co-ferment the same amount of glucose and xylose as the current strain," Ho says. In addition, she says the new method they developed to integrate multiple copies of genes into the yeast chromosome could be used to make yeast capable of producing other high-value byproducts in addition to ethanol.

If I were to tell you that there is a fungus living in your intestines that produces 180 chemical toxins capable of making you feel dizzy and fatigued, shutting down your thyroid, throwing your hormones off balance, and causing you to crave sugar and alcohol, all of which make you put on weight –would you believe me? You probably wouldn’t –few doctors even realize the extent of damage caused by yeast overgrowth but the above scenario is all too true.

To the great detriment of the health of our society, this fungus does exist and it is growing rampant in a large proportion of the population –mostly women. It’s one of the diseases of civilization – the culmination of the side effects of technology and the disservices of our way of life.

The list of chronic diseases is getting longer and longer: heart disease, cancer, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, auto immune disease, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Chronic yeast overgrowth not only worsens all the above conditions but it’s in a whole disease category by itself.

The miracle of antibiotics has its downside because it causes an overgrowth of yeast. The refining of sugar and wheat has its downside by creating a simple food source for yeast. The tremendous levels of stress hormones that flood our bodies daily, hourly, and every minute in our sped up world make us prey to yeast.

WHAT IS YEAST?
Candidiasis (yeast overgrowth) is nothing new; it’s been around for decades, ever since we began to use antibiotics in our society. Yeast itself, a cousin to molds, has grown in human bodies since Adam and Eve. Candida albicans is the main yeast in the human body. It lives there happily enough, kept in check by beneficial bacteria in the intestines. These bacteria make vitamins and help digest excess sugar that gets past the small intestine. A very special group of bacteria make lactic acid, which protects the gut and vagina against yeast.

Candida is one of the 400 organisms that live in our mouth, digestive tract, vagina and on our skin. Most of the time they all get along with their neighbors. When you begin taking antibiotics, the whole delicate balance is lost. Antibiotics wipe out most of the good and the bad bacteria leaving yeast unharmed. In the absence of any competition, yeast colonies grow into all the empty nooks and crannies of the large intestine and even the small intestine. Sugar from our diet feeds yeast and with the special lactobacillus acidophilus bacteria wiped out, there is no more production of lactic acid to protect the delicate intestinal and vaginal tissues from marauding yeast.

The beast, Candida albicans, growing wildly inside our bodies is an epidemic out of control. Most people, if they think of it at all, imagine yeast as just a pesky vaginal infection that a treatment of vaginal cream will cure overnight. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case for millions of people, especially women who suffer an astonishing array of health complaints from yeast overgrowth, yeast allergy and a build up of yeast toxins.

Leaky Gut: An Open Door To Our Tissues
It is a scientific fact that when yeast cells reach a certain critical mass they change from a round budding stage to a thread-like tissue invasive stage. They are simply running out of food and looking for more. They pack their bags and emigrate from their main home in the large intestine into the small intestine. In the small intestine, the yeast threads poke holes in the intestinal lining. With this superhighway to the blood stream, there is nothing to stop yeast chemical by-products (all 180 of them), undigested food molecules, bacterial toxins, and other chemicals from taking a one-way ride. The holes are not necessarily big enough to allow yeast to get into the blood stream, so there is no blood infection of yeast, just hundreds of waste products that should be flushed down the toilet that end up causing head to toe symptoms leak into the blood. Yes, leaky gut happens when toxins leak into the blood stream and tissues of the body.

When these toxins hit the blood stream they trigger widespread inflammatory and allergy reactions. Many of the toxins like aldehyde, alcohol, zymosan, arabinitol, and gliotoxin have been named. They impair the immune system and the central nervous system. Others block thyroid function, impair female hormones and cause symptoms of PMS and aggravate menopause but haven’t yet been properly studied. Inflammation is being investigated as the underlying cause of heart disease, bowel disease, arthritic conditions, and auto immune disease. It is also intimately involved with weight gain, fatigue, allergies, asthma, headaches, irritability, and dozens of other health complaints.

Yeast and Belly Fat
What does belly fat have in common with beef cattle? Antibiotics! These drugs are liberally used in the beef industry for the specific purpose of “beefing up” cattle. It is little recognized that antibiotics can do the same to humans! Yeast can contribute pounds of fluid retention in an attempt by the body to dilute the toxins that yeast produces. Over time, in both cattle and people, tissue toxins and fluid build up lead to cellulite and weight gain.
