Heart Risk Tool May Be Failing Kidney Patients

(HealthDay News) -- The Framingham Score -- a standard tool for predicting cardiovascular disease -- greatly underestimates the actual rate of heart disease in patients receiving dialysis for end-stage renal (kidney) disease, a new report finds.

"This (underestimation) may lead to inadequate or delayed initiation of treatments to prevent CVD in a group of patients for whom heart disease is the main cause of death," study authors Dr. Darshan S. Dalal and Dr. Rulan S. Parekh, of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, said in a prepared statement.

They and their colleagues compared predicted and actual rates of heart disease in more than 4,200 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

They found that the Framingham Score greatly underestimated cardiovascular risk for men ages 30 to 75. The median estimated risk was 2.2 percent but the actual risk over an average of two years' follow-up was 35 percent.

Among women in the same age group, the median estimated risk of cardiovascular disease was 2 percent while the actual risk was 37 percent.

The findings suggest that for 60 percent of ESRD patients who are initially free of heart disease, their risk of cardiovascular illness is much higher than that predicted by the Framingham Score, the researchers said.

"Newer and more comprehensive risk equations are needed to assess and predict cardiovascular risk in ESRD patients," Dalal and Parekh said.

The study findings were presented Friday at the American Society of Nephrology's annual meeting in San Diego.

Newly Released Data Stirs Naproxen Debate

(HealthDay News) -- Just-released data from a trial that was stopped early in 2004 for safety reasons is re-igniting debate on the safety of two popular painkillers.

The trial suggested the over-the-counter painkiller Aleve boosted heart risks, while another controversial prescription painkiller known as Celebrex did not.

Now, the data from that trial has finally been made available. But that has not silenced one critic, who says this early data is unreliable and questions the reasons the trial was stopped prematurely.

"The trial was improperly stopped by what appears to be political considerations. When you do that, you generate data which we know is unreliable," said Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

Nissen is author of an accompanying commentary in the Nov. 17 online edition of PLoS Clinical Trials, which has published the data from the Alzheimer's Disease Anti-inflammatory Prevention Trial (ADAPT).

Specifically, Nissen charges that ADAPT was cut short not on the advice of its safety-review board but by nervous officials at the U.S. National Institutes of Health, which had funded the trial. Those officials were worried about the media furor over the safety of now-withdrawn painkiller Vioxx, Nissen claims.

The medications in question all fall into the class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which include aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen and cox-2 inhibitor medications such as Celebrex and the now-withdrawn Bextra and Vioxx.

Beginning in late 2004, major studies began to show that heart risks to users rose with long-term use of cox-2s. This led to the eventual withdrawal from the market of Vioxx and Bextra, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration slapping a "black box" cardiovascular warning on the remaining cox-2, Celebrex.

In December of 2004, officials at the NIH announced the premature termination of the ADAPT trial, which had been set up to look at the possible usefulness of NSAIDs in preventing Alzheimer's disease.

Early results from that trial came as a surprise to many, because they suggested that long-term use of Celebrex did not significantly boost heart risks, while the use of an over-the-counter rival, naproxen (Aleve), did.

"We ended up stopping the trial early, when another trial brought up some safety concerns about these drugs," said study author Barbara Martin, an assistant professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

"We found a small but not statistically significant risk with celecoxib, and a larger and statistically significant increased risk with naproxen," Martin said.

But the actual data from the trial was not released at the time, adding to the confusion. It has now been published.

The 2,500 elderly participants in the ADAPT trial took either celecoxib, naproxen or placebo for up to 3.5 years.

Compared to those taking placebo, people taking celecoxib had a 10 percent increased risk of heart attack and stroke, while those taking naproxen had a 63 percent increase risk, the researchers found.

Martin said she wasn't sure why these drugs might have different risk profiles. Other trials have suggested that naproxen was actually cardioprotective, but these results indicated that it is not, she said.

Martin believes that the ADAPT results would also apply to people who take the painkillers over the long-term to help relieve arthritis.

"As yet, the specifics of the risks aren't really well-defined, but the clinical benefits of the drug are established," Martin said. "What is most clear is that when you take NSAIDs for a long period of time, there is a risk associated with them. What exactly it is, how big it is, is still not clear, but there is no completely safe NSAID."

There did not seem to be any protective effect from the drugs in terms of warding off Alzheimer's, she added. "Part of the reason we stopped was that there was some evidence of risk, and there wasn't any overwhelming evidence of benefit to counter that," Martin said.
But Nissen strongly disagreed with the findings, noting that they run counter to the results of other large trials.

"The published results of the ADAPT trial with regard to cardiovascular risk are completely unreliable," said Nissen. In his editorial, he explained that because the trial was stopped early, the data lacks the statistical power to deliver any clear verdict on either Celebrex or naproxen.
"These results cannot be used in any way to assess the relative risks of naproxen," Nissen said.

He added that he is not surprised that the premature termination of the trial in late 2004 -- coming at the height of the Vioxx debacle -- caused such a media uproar. Newspapers at the time trumpeted headlines such as "Heart Risk Seen in Naproxen" (Wall Street Journal) and "Patients, Doctors Agonize Over Risks of Painkillers", (Los Angeles Times).

"A warning was issued to the public that we now know was wrong," he said.

But Martin said she blames the media for creating a false impression of why the trial was stopped. "All of the publicity when the trial was stopped -- it was not what we intended," she said. "It's difficult in a political maelstrom of events to have the true rationale come through."
According to Martin, the trial was stopped because of data from another major trial was raising questions about the safety of Celebrex, triggering the premature closure of that arm of the ADAPT trial. When that happened, the researchers decided against continuing with the naproxen arm alone.

"We weren't seeing a risk with celecoxib (Celebrex), so it put us in a very uncomfortable position. We were imagining three years later if the adverse effects with naproxen were really real getting roundly criticized for not having stopped it earlier," she said.

Martin agreed, then, that there were political as well as safety concerns in stopping the trial.
"There was this domino effect and we felt that even though the results in and of themselves would not have led us to stop the trial, this domino effect made it necessary," she said.

Despite all the controversy, Martin feels that the trial data remains valid. She also believes it was right to have stopped the trial early. As to the safety of naproxen, Martin said there's not yet enough data to answer that question.

But Nissen said the accumulated evidence on NSAIDS supports the notion that the drug is, on the whole, safe.

"There is overwhelming evidence that of all the drugs in the class, the safest drug is naproxen," he said. "Analyses involving millions of patients have shown, consistently, that it is probably the safest drug."

Nissen doesn't believe naproxen actually protects against heart attack, however. "It's neutral," he said.

FDA OKs Return of Silicone Breast Implants

(HealthDay News) -- Despite decades of controversy over the dangers of silicone breast implants, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday lifted a 14-year ban on their commercial use.

The FDA gave approval to two companies, Allergan Inc., of Irvine Calif., and Mentor Corp, of Santa Barbara, Calif., to market the implants to all women aged 22 and older. Until now, women have only been allowed access to the implants as part of research studies.

"In 1992 the FDA required manufacturers to stop selling silicone gel-filled breast implants because of lack of data to support marketing approval," Dr. Daniel Schultz, director of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, said during a late afternoon news conference.

"What is different today is the amount of clinical and non-clinical data now available on these devices," Schultz said. Based on this new data, the FDA believes the implants are safe and effective, he added.

Allergan and Mentor have gathered the information the FDA required, Schultz said. "FDA's decision was based on a thorough review of the companies' core studies," he said. In addition, the FDA inspected their manufacturing facilities, and "these implants will be manufactured according to FDA's quality system regulations," he added.

To ensure that the products continue to be safe, the FDA has required the manufacturers to continue studies for 10 years, and to have the risks clearly stated on the products' labeling, Schultz said.

"Women should know that breast implants are not lifetime devices," Schultz said. "A woman will likely need additional surgeries on her breasts, at least once over her lifetime."

In reaching the decision, the FDA considered the risks and benefits of silicone implants," Dr. Donna Bea-Tillman, FDA's director of the Office of Device Evaluation, said during the news conference.

"Although there were a number of complications reported in the core studies, including breast hardening, breast pain, breast implant rupture, and the need for additional surgery, most of the women in the core studies reported being satisfied with their results," she said.

In addition, the FDA looked at a report by the Institute of Medicine, which found no cases of connective tissue disease or cancer associated with silicon implants, Bea-Tillman said.

The watchdog group Public Citizen has opposed the use of silicone gel breast implants since the fall of 1988. At that time, they petitioned the FDA to ban them after receiving numerous documents from FDA scientists concerned about their safety.

"The moratorium has been on for 14 years, and there is a lot of pressure from various places, from companies and plastic surgeons, to approve them," Public Citizen's Dr. Sidney Wolfe said. "It doesn't make any sense to approve them now."

Wolfe noted that saline implants are safer and a viable alternative to silicone.

"Saline implants have been approved for a long time," Wolfe said. "We never opposed the approval of those. When a saline implant ruptures, salt water, which is what we are made of, leaks out. When silicone implants rupture, a third of a quart of sticky, highly reactive, silicone gel goes out. It's just a black -and-white difference in terms of the dangers."

According to Public Citizen, the dangers of silicone implants, such as high rates of rupture, the need for repeat surgery and clear evidence of lymph node infiltration and damage by leaked silicone, were known when the devices were approved.

"Silicone gel breast implants are the most defective medical device ever approved by the FDA. The approval makes a mockery of the legal standard that requires 'reasonable assurance of safety,' " Public Citizen said in a prepared statement.

In addition, the group thinks this latest FDA action is a "reminder of the double standard for women vs. men that the FDA has not approved silicone gel testicular implants because of the inadequacy of clinical trials on these devices. Saline breast implants and testicular implants have been approved by the FDA."

Another critic of the FDA's decision sees the approval as the FDA giving in to pressure from corporations.

"This appears to be yet another example of the FDA dismissing scientific evidence in order to appease corporate interests," Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and the top Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee in charge of the FDA budget, said in a statement.

(These chemicals are also found in dishwashing detergents.)Because children are more susceptible to these toxins than adults, we need to be especially careful about what they inhale and what we rub onto their skin. Problems from synthetic "fragrance" reported to the FDA have included headaches, dizziness, rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing and vomiting, and allergic skin irritation.

Exposure to fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope, and other behavioral changes. Update: A Common Misconception

It is often said that 'acidic ' fruits like lemons, limes and grapefruits will acidify the blood and tissues.

In fact, the citric, lactic, and other acids in such low sugar fruits - unlike high sugar fruits - exsist primarily in their anionic (basic or electron) form, especially as their Na+ and K+ salts (e.g., potassium citrate). Following absorption, these anions (bases or electrons) are metabolized to sodium bicarbonate.

Thus, lemons, limes and grapefruits alkalinize - not acidify - blood and tissues.Alkalinization occurs - even though the pH is typically low - because free cations (protons or acids) are more than directly offset by the generated sodium bicarbonate from the low sugar fruit.

For example, a liter of lime juice with a pH of 4, has 10 to the minus 4 moles of free cations (protons or acids). The quantity of organic anions (bases or electrons) in the lime juice far exceeds this number of free cations (protons or acids) and therefore, a net alkalinization will occur. This net alkalinization does not occur with high sugar fruit drinks like grape juice or grape juice concentrate, pear juice or pear juice concentrate, apple juice or apple juice concentrate - all found as ingredients in the Himalayan Goji Juice.

The Himalayan Goji Juice has a pH of 3.65, an ORP of +181 mV, a rH2 of 25.81. Thus, bone dissolution can help mitigate a fall in pH from eating or drinking high sugar fruits and fruit drinks.During metabolic acidosis from the sugars in the fruit and fruit drinks, carbonate on the bone surface acts as a proton acceptor. An important mechanism appears to be the chemical exchange of free protons from the acidic fruit sugar bound to the carbonate.

The buffering reaction is:2H+ + CO3- <=> CO2 + H2ODuring states of metabolic acidosis buffering takes place through a combination of (1) direct chemical exchange with bone cations (protons or acids), just as during as the buffering of metabolic acids from the acidic fruit sugars, and (2) increased activity of osteoclast cells, which help mobilize additional bone mineral.

Both acute and chronic bone buffering lead to the urinary excretion of bone calcium, which will reduce bone mass (osteopenia), cause calcium stone formation in the kidneys, and cause a sudden rise in the pH of the urine. All of this high sugar fruit eating and drinking may not only cause bone loss and calcium stone formation, but also eventually lead to renal damage and then renal failure.Conclusion: Eat and drink all the low sugar fruits and fruit drinks like avocados, peppers, lemons, limes and grapefruits because they will alkalize the blood and tissues.

They add to the alkaline reserves, not reduce the alkaline reserves of body and therefore a net alkalinization occurs. Rice is Nice?

NEW DELHI, India - October 10 - Test results released today by Greenpeace International establish that rice products being sold in the Middle East region have also been contaminated by Bayer's illegal genetically engineered (GE) rice grown in field trials in the United States.

(1) Contamination in the Middle East has serious global implications as the region is the world's 2nd largest importer of US rice and a major re-exporter of food throughout the Asia region.

Today, Greenpeace activists challenged Agriculture Ministers attending the International Rice Congress (IRC) in Delhi to take immediate action to prevent the continuing contamination of the world's most important staple food. Conference delegates were presented with symbolic bowls of rice with question marks. Agricultural ministers of eight countries

(2) are participating in the IRC, to set the agenda for rice production and export over the next five years, discussing trade issues as well as scientific innovations and sustainable solutions for rice production. Ironically, Bayer and Monsanto - the two main advocates for the GE industry, are jointly sponsoring the Congress, placing them in a key position to influence the agenda to their advantage.

Contamination from Bayer's rice has already been found in nine countries, and resulted in import restrictions against the United States. "The contaminated rice in the Middle East is yet another body blow to the US rice industry, already reeling under product recalls, testing requirements, import restrictions and cancelled orders in many countries," said Divya Raghunandan, GE campaigner from Greenpeace India.

"Now, more than ever before, it is clear that GE crops pose a serious risk and that 'controlled field trials' are a dangerous myth. Any country allowing GE crops to be grown, even in field trials, is exposing its farmers and traders of agricultural produce to an economic and environmental disaster. A complete ban is the only solution," added Raghunandan.

Greenpeace urged governments to protect this staple food, by drawing up a clear plan of action to protect their countries from similar GE contamination, prevent genetic contamination of crops and hold Bayer accountable for its recklessness. "The extent of contamination necessitates an urgent response. This rice and its by-products could be on supermarket shelves anywhere," warned Jeremy Tager, GE Campaigner from Greenpeace International.

"We urge agricultural ministers to immediately order comprehensive testing of all products that may have been exposed to contamination from GE rice, and to impose strict import controls on any goods imported from GE rice-growing countries. It will take a globally coordinated approach to ensure that citizens everywhere are responsibly protected from GE-contaminated products," concluded Tager.

Now that rice and its by-products are potentially GE contaminated and the fact that rice is highly acidic you now have two good reasons to give up rice in your diet!

What is the Cause of Cancer and Where Does it Begin?

1) What is the origin of cancer or where does cancer begin?

Cancerous tissue, above all other consequences of choice, has countless secondary causes.

But even for a cancerous condition there is only ONE PRIME ORIGIN and CAUSE.

I have simply summarized this origin and cause of cancerous tissue in a few words.

The prime origin and cause of cancerous tissue is the over-acidification of the blood then the tissues due to lifestyle and dietary choices. A cancerous tissue begins with our choices of what we eat, what we drink, what we think and how we live.

Cancer is a liquid and this liquid is a toxic waste product of metabolism or energy consumption.In 1966, Dr. Otto Warburg, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1931 for his discovery of the cause of cancer delivered a lecture at an annual meeting of Nobelists at Lindau, Germany.

In his speech he described the primal cause of cancer as follows: "The prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar. All normal body cells meet their energy needs by respiration of oxygen, whereas cancer cells meet their energy needs in great part by fermentation.

All normal body cells are thus obligate aerobes, whereas all cancer cells are partial anaerobes. From the standpoint of the physics and chemistry of life this difference between nomal and cancer cells is so great that one can scarely picture a greater difference.

Oxygen gas, the donor of energy in plants and animals is dethroned in the cancer cells and replaced by an energy yielding reaction of the lowest living forms. namely, a fermentation of glucose."

The following is a summary of understanding cancerous tissues:

Cancer is not a cell but a poisonous acidic liquid.A cancer cell, is a cell that has been spoiled or poisoned by metabolic or gastrointestinal acids.A tumor is the body's protective mechanism to encapsulate spoiled or poisoned cells from excess acid that has not been properly eliminated through urination, perspiration, defecation or respiration.

The tumor is the body's solution to protect healthy cells and tissues.

Cancer is a systemic acidic condition that settles at the weakest parts of the body -not a localized problem that metastases. Metastases is localized acids spoiling other cells much like a rotten apple spoiling a bushel of healthy apples.

There is no such thing as a cancer cell.

A cancer cell was once a healthy cell that has been spoiled from acid.

The tumor is not the problem but the solution to protect healthy cells and tissues from being spoiled from other rotting cells and tissues.

The only solution to the acidic liquids that poison body cells causing the affect that medical savants call cancer is to alkalize and energize the body.

In conclusion, the human body is alkaline by design and acidic by function! If we desire a healthy body we must maintain that alkaline design.

2) Does diet and lifestyle have anything to do with cancer?

Absolutely!

Cancer is not something we get it is something we do as a consequence of daily choice of what we eat, what we drink, what we think and how we live.

We either have an alkaline lifestyle and diet and enjoy a fit and healthy body or we have an acidic lifestyle and diet and experience the aches, pains and suffering from metabolic acids.

The former US Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, had this to say about diet:"YOUR CHOICE OF DIET CAN INFLUENCE YOUR LONG TERM HEALTH PROSPECTS MORE THAN ANY OTHER ACTION YOU MIGHT TAKE."

3) If cancer is preventable how do we prevent it?

I have said many times that the cure for cancerous tissue will not be found in its treatment but in its prevention.

That prevention can only be obtained by making healthier lifestyle and dietary choices. A cancerous condition is the consequence of choice.

For example, if you want to reduce your risk for cancereous tissue of the lung by 100%, then stop smoking and stop associating or working around people that do smoke.

Secondary smoke is just as acidic and damaging to the lung tissue. If don't want a cancerous liver then stop drinking alcohol and carbonated drinks. If you don't want a cancerous pancreas then stop eating the acid sugar.

If you don't want a cancerous bowel then stop eating protein. It is that simple.

Traveler's Acidic Consequence and Holiday Season Influenza

Here are two non-contagious lifestyle and dietary conditions (called diseases by allopathic medicine) for which I have given new names:

1) Traveler's Acidic Consequence is a result of the sum total consumption and behaviors of a traveler during their more unusual or somewhat different from normal lifestyle than when they were not traveling. A typical traveler's day will upset one's normal metabolism and digestive habits.

They eat and drink different foods at different times and different volumes than usual, which creates an over-acid state and a need for more alkaline buffers (bicarbonates) leading to indigestion, constipation, dehydration and further problems of acidity, depending on the degree of irregularity.

Traveler's Acidic Consequence is commonly blamed by allopathic medical science on a particular site on the traveler's path as if he caught something.

This current medical ideology is based on Pasteur's germ theory and is a scientific illusion.

The true cause of this condition is the result of the traveler's acidic dietary choices and the lack of alkaline hydration, nutrition and hygiene that can result in this over-acidic condition.

2) Holiday Season Influenza (The Flu) is a result of the sum total consumption and behaviors of a person during so-called holiday acidic feasting.

They will consume acidic foods and drinks that they know are not healthy or alkalizing, i.e., more sugar or sugar substitutes than normal, alcohol, meats and much of this at greater volumes than normal.

They become detrimentally influenced physically and emotionally by holiday acidic foods.

Holiday Season Influenza is commonly blamed on a particular virus contracted from another person(s) and not from acidic lifestyle and dietary choices of that person.

Like the acidic traveler, a person chooses to consume on their own as many acidic foods and drinks during the holiday season and as a result are suffering from the consequences of their poor dietary choices -- not from some phantom flu virus!

The flu is nothing more than the body increasing temperature to improve circulation to remove excess acidity through perspiration, respiration, defication and urination.

Also, please keep in mind it doesn't take either traveling or holidays for someone to express the symptoms of Traveler's Acidic Consequence and/or Holiday Season Influenza.

All you need to do is consume excessive amounts of acidic meats, chocolate, ice cream, cake, alcohol or other thrillers.

This can happen in the middle of a warm summer.

This coming Holiday Season may you resolve not to succumb to the acidic choices that lead to Traveler's Acidic Consequence and/or Holiday Season Influenza.

About 2 years ago I lost a niece to suicide, after this tremendous shock I began to experience depression like I had never experienced before and over a period of time got to the point where not only did I not have any energy what so ever but I had no drive.

I would sleep for up to 12 hours some days and feel like I was coming out of a general anaesthetic for hours after waking up.

I also got to the point where I had to have an afternoon sleep to feel that I could cope with the 2nd shift of the day (the kids), after school.

I also was finding I had little if any patience left for my husband and kids. Around this same period of time I began to experience quite severe attacks of acid just below the sternum.

I went to the doctors reluctantly as I am not a big fan of allopathic medicine.

I had a scan done to see if I had gallstones etc and the deluxe blood test of them all. The scan came back clear, and the tests came back looking really good. I was told there was nothing wrong with me.

I had great health according to the tests.At this point I realised that I needed to look elsewhere but to be honest I had tried lots of alternatives prior to the doctor, which was the last resort at that point.

I then listened to a CD of Tony Robbins about a green drink and how he regained his energy through drinking this 'green stuff'. That was the beginning of my journey back to the house of health and things began to really improve for me on all levels.

I bought Dr. Young's book Sick & Tired? and for the first time ever found amazing common sense within the pages.

I could not believe in all the study of natural medicine etc that I had done I had never heard of any of this before. Within about 3 weeks of drinking the greens I began to regain my strength and for the first time in 2 years felt there really was a light at the end of the tunnel.

I no longer needed to have that afternoon nap I had needed before, I found my patience levels increased dramatically which means so much to me as I was able to enjoy my kids again. As my energy increased more and more and the terrible acid pain left me once and for all I realised that more people needed to know about this approach.

I see people everyday walk in and they all write down on their intake form that they're exhausted, have aches and pains and of course some are a lot worse than this. Some are very sceptical when we first begin as they have heard so many theories, tried so many things, trusted so many practitioners, wasted so much money and for several they have said this was the last thing they were going to try.

By the time they walk out they are excited, they all say this stuff makes so much sense, why has no one told me this before? They all have new hope.

I love the fact that I know this really works. I explain that the more that they change the more they will improve but it really is down to them. For some it takes a process that they need to go through, a few had not been ready to take responsibility and still wanted to blame someone else for their problems but the seeds are planted and usually after a few weeks they come around and begin the program.

I personally think that systemic yeast, parasites and Hyperadrenia are seriously overlooked in the allopathic world, but I guess there's too much money to loose.

Since I have brought this into our clinic, our business has grown in so many ways, the type of client who walks through our doors has changed and we have got more out of the course than we could have ever dreamed possible.

I had paid back the cost of this course (including the travel and accommodation expenses) in less than 4 months, but more importantly we, as a family, 'practice what we preach'.

Grape Seed Extract Stops the Growth of Cancer

Chemicals found in grape seeds inhibited the growth of colorectal tumors in both cell cultures and in mice.

Grape seed extract has already been demonstrated to have anti-cancer effects on other tumor types, as well. The skin and seeds of grapes are rich in proanthocyanidins, antioxidant flavonoids that remove harmful free radicals from cells.

After first exposing grape seed extract to two different kinds of human carcinoma cells, researchers discovered a dose- and time-dependent inhibition of cell growth. Live cancer cells that were exposed for the longest time -- about two days -- decreased by 92 percent when given the highest dose.

Cip1/p21
Experiments on mice then showed 44 percent reduction of advanced colorectal tumors, and also demonstrated for the first time the molecular mechanism by which grape seed extract inhibits cancer growth. It increases a critical protein, Cip1/p21, that effectively freezes the tumor cell cycle, and can push a cancer cell to self destruct.

Increased 150 Times
The amount of Cip1/p21 protein within the cells increased 150 times after 12 hours of treatment. The longer the extract was used, the more cancer cells were frozen before they had a chance to divide.

The research team now intends to determine the lowest effective dose, and the highest non-toxic doses, for grape seed extract used on mice.
